There was an article in the local newspaper, The Santa Fe New Mexican, a few weeks ago about how too many people are going up into the REM drainage, not being responsible, and leaving trash on the trail. No bueno!

Yesterday I drove up to Pacheco Canyon Road to check the fire out. Here is a photo from about 4pm. I was about 1 mile away when I took this photo. The fire appears to be burning on the northern slope of a large hill just west of the Double Discount Trail. There were a few flaming trees which could be seen occasionally from distance. Yikes!

Like many mountain bikers, I adore REM, Rancho Viejo, the Borrego, Double Discount, and Aspen Ranch. It would be yet another blow to this fragile ecosystem if the fire gets back in there again.

It's a drainage north of REM. Someone rode REM yesterday morning and REM and Cutover are unscathed. Rio Nambe is in the path and will likely sustain some damage especially as CA is eating up all available fire resources.

Looking^ north/northeast from the top of the switchbacks, aka ride the beast, yesterday morning, 8AM.

Inciweb reports the Medio fire at 1500+ acres as of 8pm last night. I have a bad feeling about this one now. With so little rain this summer, hot temps forecasted for the next few days coming with moderate winds, fuel loads are prime to burn quickly. A type 2 fire suppression crew is due later today. Hopefully they can help, but with it doubling in size yesterday, they may just have to stand back and watch as there is no way to get in front of this beast when it crowns.

Here's the progression map - https://ftp.nifc.gov/public/inciden...og_11x17_land_20200825_2029_Medio_0826day.jpg

Here's where maps are by day - https://ftp.nifc.gov/public/inciden.../GACC_Incidents/2020/2020_Medio/GIS/Products/. Select a day, then look for one that starts with ops_arch_e_land_... for a higher definition pdf file.

So far it's just touched Pacheco road and they don't expect it to creep down it.

There have been daily community meetings on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/santafeNF/ at 6 pm. You do not need a FB account to watch the meetings.

Most of the Type 1 and 2 crews are fighting fires in AZ or CO. The Ops personnel think they've made good progress on getting this under control. Keeping it north of Pacheco road is a priority and it's looking like that'll happen.

Someone made a run Saturday morning. That was probably pretty wild as there were still trees torching up by Aspen Ranch and the smoke would make for a crazy ride. I wouldn't recommend it unless you have nomex, good insurance, damn good luck and.. Well, I just wouldn't recommend it.
