Here's the story, I may be receiving a job offer in Huntsville AL after I graduate. Myself and buddy were flown out there for an "interview" that felt more like a sales pitch about the job and Huntsville itself. During the short time that I was in town for the interview we were shown around a bit I could see the mountains in the distance and the generally hilly nature of the land out there. It looked like there should be some good trails in the area, and after checking out the reviews here on mtbr it looks like there are some trails in Huntsville but I'd like to hear about the general riding of northern alabama.

So basically, how's the riding in, around, and within a days worth of driving from Huntsville? The guy that was showing us around mentioned that a quick drive north would bring me into TN and the mountains around western NC.

There is some good riding around Huntsville, but you will need to travel a little further to get the great riding. There is plenty in the N Georgia and S TN region and Oak Mtn down in Birmingham.

There are alot of good trails in the Huntsville area. Monte Sano State Park is the on the mountain you can see from the city, this is where most of the trails are. There are also some on Wade mountain (Devils Racetrack). Within a 2 hour drive is Birmingham, Nashville, Chattanooga with a ton of trial in any direction. All of the above and not to mention the closeness you are to N.O.C area and Tsali. They would be GREAT weekend gettaways that won't break the gas budget.
I think Hunstville is a great location to be for mtn. biking within a 2 hour driving radius.

Thanks for all the info! It looks like there are quite a few trails reasonably close to huntsville. I don't mind driving for three or four hours to get to great trails, that's what I gotta do here in FL to get to the best.

like you I used to drive for hours in FL to bike. I lived in Sarasota and racked up many a mile on I-75 back in the day even for a mediocre tail at times.

How long ago was that? I guess the trails have improved because the long drives I'm talkin about are to places like TOE, Alafia, Santos, and Markham. All top notch trails, I wouldn't drive for very long to get to sub-par trails.

If only I could remember the names... Just below Sarasota about 20 miles and the trail actually goes under the interstate at one point. and then the trail system east of Tampa. I shouldn't say they were bad trails, but normally wouldn't go that far for a trail like that. I really enjoyed my years in FL. It is definitely a different style of riding than other places in the country, I guess that's what I should have said.
I hear that Hard Rock park is no longer accessible... Now I truly enjoyed that loop and could be my all-time top 10. Short, but great race loop.
