Hey guys,

Well the title of this thread show's my question... how do you do it?

everytime i try i can't get my balance on the bike...any advice?
thanks
Are you talking about pedallin' backwards, (this would require a fixed gear), or sitting on the bike backwards with your buttocks on the handlebars. Either way it takes bowance,Danielson!

or perhaps you could join the circus. In all seriousness, I think it's just something you have to work on . Oh yeah, don't forget the whole "eyes in the back of your head" thing.

Be careful. Enough of us get hurt riding a bike the way it was intended to be ridden.

This takes a good bit of practice. I cannot recommend that you try it with clipless pedals. Starting it from a trackstand is what I typically do. Rarely can I coordinate hopping backwards off something into a backwards roll. These instructions assume you can't trackstand.

stand up (seats are for sissies)

Bike slowly forward on level ground

hit the front brake and come to a stop
at this point your hips should be forward

shoot your butt back as you release your front brake
This gives you the momentum to go backwards

practice coordinating reverse steering with back pedaling (assuming you got enough momentum from your butt to keep your bike upright...)
This will take you weeks to figure out. Keep at it. The only "trick" to getting it is practice. Before you realize it you will be able to coast down your street backwards or rumble backwards down flights of stairs.

for me there were two ways I practiced it-

A) go to a skatepark and ride slowly up a ramp, so that you run out of speed about halfway up and gravity takes you back down. You get to decide how fast you go backwards this way.
B)Just ride slowly into a wall or something, and use body english / tire rebound etc to get some backwards speed. Slow but good practice.

It doesn't take too long to learn. Stay loose and don't panic if you start to turn. The hardest part is to remember to pedal backwards. Actually no the hardest part is turning around again, I can go backwards for a long time sitting or standing but I can't turn around again. Sometimes I can pedal forward out of it but usually not.
