I'm an avid rider who's been riding for over 10yrs I do road rides but ride mostly off road I'v been riding 4 to 5 times a week most of the time I push my limits up and down and try and spin when riding on the road. I've been feeling tired lately,I rest when needed and eat well so it's not any of that. I was wondering if it would be better to ride more days per week at an easier pace with a day or two at a hard pace. It would give me more saddle time and more miles but would my fitness get better without feeling tired? I already have a very strong base arobic&power. My road rides are 30 miles and my offroad rides are about 12 to 20 miles average with usually technical steep climbs. Any input would be appreciated.

I agree, grab a book, they will help.

The one thing I noticed that you never mentioned is a goal; what is it your trying to acheive? My offroad rides are the same length, but I only ride twice a week. Whereas my road rides are more frequent and vary between light recovery rides and hard intervals and hill repeats. I prefer road riding for training, all you just have to step out the door. It is also easier to make routes for certian rides, whereas on the trail you have to follow the trail.

Feeling tired and/or not being able to get your heart rate up are classic signs of overtraining and/or under-resting. You may be riding too much and/or too hard. If so you might need some time off or at least more time between rides. Every ride shouldn't be a pace ride. They are fun but not the best for training. If you want to ride hard, keep it short. Intervals will help you ride harder for longer. If you really want to train and get faster, you have to get out of your comfort zone. This means riding harder for shorter periods of time (intervals) and slower for longer periods of time (long slow distance). So instead of riding a couple hours at a time 4-5 times a week, try mixing it up with a couple shorter 1 hr intensity interval sessions, doing a 4+hr slow ride and take some more time off to recover. If you're not feeling it, stop and take the day off. Just pick up the slack next time.
