About two weeks ago I picked up a monocog flight off from ebay and I finally got a real ride on it today. Of course, because I am a brilliant planner, I haven't trued or replaced the bearings on the 650b wheelset this bike was destined for, so I ran the 26" wheels, which I haven't ridden in a year or two, and it came with a suspension fork, which I haven't used in years (excluding trips to AZ and CO and those weren't bikes dialed in the way I like to roll).

The ride was pretty fun. For the most part, I didn't notice much about the wheelsize- I did miss some rollover on some tech sections and once the back wheel simply stopped on what was a rut. The worst thing for me with the 26" hoops was the over the bar sensation on steep slopes. Overall the bike feels tiny with the little wheels, but it went away pretty quick on the trail.

The fork, a Manitou R7, was really great. On lockout I thought it did the ~2k fireroad climb almost as well as my rigid fork. Downhill, it spoiled me. I'm really used to picking lines constantly and after the first mile of downhill, I got lazy and just plowed through roots, rocks, whatever. Still, it didn't make me that much faster because the top speed is really limited to sight lines and I don't have the trail even close to memorized.

However, once the singletrack became more rolling, the fork began to irritate. When I stand up to clear uphill obstacles or climb, the bike bobs in the front when I don't have the opportunity to reach down for the lockout. I think I'm faster on the twisty rollers with a rigid fork.

I'll need to figure out when to use the suspension fork and when to use rigid. I'll have both dialed in with their own brake, so swapping won't take but a minute.

So I'm really stoked about the bike. The Monocog Flight is really beautiful and it is giving me problems I wasn't expecting- I don't want to break it. Or scratch it. Hopefully I can put a dent in it tomorrow.

It is a 2007- so it is steel. It has good clearance for 650b. Well, I had a 2.1 Nevegal back there and the axle wasn't moved all the way back. I can update you after I get a ride or two with a 650b in back. I think I might have similar amounts of room on it as I did on my standard monocog.

Sorry for the crappy photos, but the camera was drunk and couldn't focus. The first is a 2.35 Neomoto at the chainstays and the second where the dropouts are in the sliders (I'm assuming I'm effing up the some technical lingo, but if people have problems with it, **** 'em). There is ~2mm on either side, so not great. The 2.1 Nevegal is a little better (third picture) but not much. I'll do the Nevs because I have them and I like them in the mud and it'll be enough clearance as long as my wheel doesn't get really out of true. Moving it back the last bit will help as well.

I'm going to try to get ~40 miles on it this coming weekend assuming I get my front wheel back. Rock and roll. I'm going to watch Dexter and leave a strip of butt sweat on the couch.

I have an R7 on my bike right now. It doesnt have the lockout though. I've tried a few different forks, some much better quality, but this one seems to be the one i ride best on. I set them all up pretty much the same, but for some reason, this one just seems a little more loose, which takes the edge off a little. I tend to run my forks a little high in the PSI so i dont get much pedal bob at all. It's really just there for the bigger hits that would otherwise throw me for a loop.

Um, how much do you weigh and what psi are you running the forks at? The R7 has really been good. Long climbs it is fine, but man, get on a short hill you want to crush and bob, bob, bob...

Sooner or later I'll update photos with your chainring and cog!

I'm about 175lbs, and i run about 115psi, but it's been a while since i checked, so i could be wrong. It is pretty friggin firm though.
The fork is lightyears beyond the skareb that it replaced. That thing was like trying to play pool with a garden hose.

I'd love to see some pics of the gear, as always :)

Thanks for the pics. I don't ride in mud, so clearance shouldn't be an issue. I'm also thinking of going 650b/26 first, then maybe stepping up to full 650b if I'm not satisfied with the original set up.
Rigid or suspended? I did 650b front with a 26" back last summer and it was great. It steered a little slower, but I really liked it. I don't know at this point if I prefer a 26" back or a 650b, but rollover is noticeably better with 650b.

If you are cool with ebay, two Kona Units just went for sale for pretty good prices recently and I think Soul Cycles is cutting deals for their Hooligan. What are you looking at?

I can take some photos of the **** on bikes for you. I have half assedly decent shots from time to time and you can use them if you want.

I used this for my set up guide lines. I'll up my psi for next weekend and see if works better, but I'm sorta top heavy and I don't know if I will ever keep the fork from bobbing.

I think I'm going rigid (CF). I'm not sure about the 26" Kona's, but there's been several threads on 29er Units having cracking problems (right at the seat/chain stay conjunction). I don't think I want to risk that, especially if I buy it second-hand.

Here are the frames I'm considering:

- On One Inbred (the newly designed version. On One said that they're about 2 months from production. I asked for pics, but haven't heard back yet).
- Surly 1x1. Old favorite. Not much to say. It's a solid performer. But it is the most expensive out of the frames on my list.
- Monocog (Flight?). I love my 29er Monocog (non-Flight). Local shop has the 26" on sale at $350, but it's the older green version (this is a plus, as I dig the color scheme better).
- Hooligan -- I've read some reviews just raving about this frame. Two negatives are aluminum frame and EBB. Also, not sure if 650B will fit, although if I just keep 26" in the back, it will be a moot point.

The 2.35 Neo fits in the Hooligan and the Icon. It probably has more room than the Flight and standard Monocog (I have both MCs). On both the 2.1 is a tighter fit than I'd ideally want, but has worked so far, without issues. I've only heard great things about the Hooligan.

Good luck tracking something down.
