Reverse Spam? 4" Springs for '02 Z1 Needed...

357 Views 3 Replies 2 Participants Last post by  Bikinfoolferlife
I want to knock my 2002 Z1 from 5" down to 4" travel. (yes, I really do, I already have an 8" rig and a 6" rig)

Do I just add to the top out spring spring, or do I have to also change out the positive spring?

Good source for these?

Thanks!

I've changed an 00 z1 from 130 to 100, but not an 02; think it was just a swap of positive springs but it's been a while. Check out http://aebike.com/site/page.cfm?PageID=30&Category=533&Brand=233&type=T for spring kits.

Thanks - that's a good site.

What's the deal with the top out springs though? If they remain the same length won't the fork end up with a inch of slop at the top of its travel?
I couldn't remember like I said but I went downstairs and pulled my service guides (the kind you used to be able to download at Marzocchi's site) for both the 00 and the 02 (I've got one too but it's still 130). The rebound springs are in a different location on the 00 (under the cartridges) so am pretty sure I didn't change those when converting as I don't remember taking out the cartridges (pretty sure I found the info here on mtbr and just didn't print it out).

The 02 was convertible to 110, not 100 as I was thinking. The guide has a poor illustration in that I don't see the actual separate springs in the diagrams at all, but says in the removal instructions: "cartridges fitted to forks with a travel of 130 feature a rebound spring (26) that is the same fitted in both fork legs. Rebound springs in forks with a travel of 110 are different: rebound spring (26) is in the LH fork leg, while rebound spring (34) is in the RH fork leg." There is also a preload tube/spacer in the LH leg on the 110 setup. Unfortunately the illustrations that I printed don't show the numbered springs specifically (it might not have printed, the numbers 26 and 34 didn't either, but the springs pictured appear the same and don't show the whole spring either).

You might want to contact Brian Petersen from Marzocchi who uses the boards occasionally or give them a call on just what you need to do for the 02 Z1 conversion...
