I am doing a full restoration on a 1993 Cannondale M500, the frame and fork have been sandblasted and prepped and are now primered. But before I do final paint, I'd like to replace the headset and BB/crank with brand new ones. Does anyone know where I can get these parts, the right ones, brand new? Can I use a more modern style? I am turning this bike into a light trail, gravel, no more rock gardens for this rigid HT. Thanks in advance....

Well waht parts do you have their now... as in the brands and also the dimensions?
If you want brand new, then trawling ebay or retrobike.co.uk may be your best bet... new but actaully "new" may be easier. But will depend.

Is it a threaded or threadless headset?
What size, that era of cannondale could be 1in, 1-1/8th or 1-1/4 (you better hope not the last, ugh)
Are the cranks square taper? ISIS, Octalink or external (each version is newer, old to current)
What is the width of the bottom bracket shell (measure it)
If you can find out, what is the spindle length.

Threaded BB
Crank is a Shimano Altus A-10 dual SIS
Spindle, 4.5", square tapered
HT looks to be 1.5" in width
BB width looks to be also 1.5"
Current HS is a Tange-Seiki, threaded

Since i'm not having problems, it might be better to leave well enough alone and just remove and clean up what i have and a new fresh re-grease. I'll post some photos soon..

So square taper BB's are available, but lower end these days and become more scarce, but they are fairly bulletproof. You just need the dimentsions, so its either 68mm or 73mm for the shell, measuer with a tape measure, then the spindle, if 4.5 inch will be 114mm or something. So you jsu tlook up that and see what is available. And thread will just mean english thread.
eg, just for example:

For the headsetm is it headshock? If so then you will need a headset that will fit the wacky dimentsions.
If not headshock, then it is either 1in, 1-1/8 or 1-1/4. 1-1/2 would be headshock or whatever the size is for those.

Long story short, I did find a new factory Shimano BB and installed it, works great. We also are swapping over the old quill stem (for the threaded fork) with a mock steering tube so we can add in a modern stem and handlebars. I say mock steering tube because this "adapter" which slips down into the actual steering tube acts like a "fork style" steering tube.

All new V-brakes installed, grips are on. I believe just the derailleur and chain, that should just about wrap it up.

Thanks,,i'll post some much better pics when complete..

yeah, this bike was like 28 pounds prior to restoration. It should be a little less than that now, due to changing out a few items. this bke will now be a gravel road, fire road, hard packed trails and such... i am putting on an XT deraullieur..

Bike is 100% complete. Here are a few pics. It rides very quiet and smooth, shifts up and down like butter. That blue tab on the end of the derallieur cable had to replace the standard one, too short and frayed, but it works. It will make as a good gravel and even a mild road bike for family rides, my son is going to use it until we order him a modern HT.
