You'll want to know how much travel your frame can accept, the size of your steerer tube and whether you want coil or air. A budget might help too, along with trail conditions around you and what type of riding you do.
I have a trek myself. This is just my old bike that my girlfriend is ridding and the shock has been serviced and still leaking out, with 250lb in it, it will still only be half way extended. So I want to put a decent air shock on there for just an everyday xc type bike. But still be hearty even to hold me at 210
