For those of you that have XT first and second generation skewers, the o-rings may have started rotting. I have scoured Hardware stores, Car parts stores etc, and haven't been able to find matching replacements. Available o-rings seem never to have the correct i/d and the correct cross-section.
Anyway, I found 3/16" rubber o-rings in the local hardware store that are about 3" in diameter. Cut them into the correct lengths and apply one drop of superglue to the end, press firmly, and voilla!
The attached pic shows some of my attempts. The one on the skewer head is manufactured by me, as is the stack of 3. In all cases I haven't done any joint smoothing or removal of excess glue yet.
