Recovery from Endurance events

One of my goals for 2010 is endurance mountain bike racing. Most likely many of the WEMSeries, which are either 100 miles or up to 12 hours. There have been great discussions about training for these events, but little about recovery.

How long does recovery typically take from one of these events? Regular races can happen every week. Is doing a road race, a crit, or even a ‘regular’ mountain bike race the next weekend reasonable? Or will that most likely be expecting too much from the body?

What do you do to help your body recover? Besides staying fueled and hydrated.

When I lived in Iowa, I was racing 1 or 2 of the WEMS 12 hour solos ever month and a half. I never raced back to back....always seem like I had a solid 2 weeks in between to rest up. In general, I would give 2-4 weeks to recover. It varies from person to person....hence the 2-4 week span.

How to recover? Good food, sleep, massage, stretching, yoga, easy bike rides, and ice cream!
