Recon 351 lockout problem

1256 Views 10 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  AchrisK
Today, I was riding around the streets, having a good time. I tried my lockout for going up a hill, and it didnt lock at all. I tried closing the gate all the way, and it still didnt lock. I got off the bike, tried putting the fork to full travel, then locking it, and still nothing.

Does anyone have any advice on how to get my 2007 Rock Shox Recon 351's to lock out?

Thanks

That sounds like an extremely unfortunate situation. Good luck figuring that out!
My revelation does the same thing, it's basically the same fork. I've got it apart right now, so I'll post again when I figure it out. I'm pretty sure it's a bad motion control assembly or fouled oil. The oil looked really bad when I poured it out and it separates into 2 different color levels in the drain container.

I'd try to change the oil first and see if it fixes it.
Have you stored the bike upside down? Is this with a manual lever or with the Poploc remote? If the poploc cables is a bit slack you won't get any lockout.
I broke a motion control on my Tora riding in very cold weather... LBS found a small plastic piece in the right fork leg. The fork was under warranty so a replacement came from RS for free.
I have not stored the bike upside down, and when it stopped working, it was not cold weather so I;m not sure. But I'll have the bike shop take a look at it
I had this happen as well as loss of travel. What seems to cause it is turning the bike upside down while the pop lock is on.I had it happen when I first got my 351 and as I rode it it fixed itself. Now Like a dummy I did it again.I will ride it now to see if it works itself out once more.Seems like the oil gets trapped away when doing this if only while fixing a flat.My advise is set the pop lock on alittle bit as you should have motion control and ride it to see if it works itself out.It may take a few rides but it worked fine for me before till I screwed it up again.

Now that you say that, I did fix a rear flat and had the bike upside down for a few minutes with that. I'll try that. Thanks a bunch.
Rockshox says if these forks are upside down or on their side for a period of time you need to vigorously pump the shock up to 20 times to get the oil back where it's supposed to be. Since you were on the street the shock may have not cycled enough to do this. Try this before you do anything radical.
Chang the oil. I just put mine back together after complete dissasembly and inspection. I couldn't find anything wrong inside, other than the oil condition. I put fresh oil in and everything works again, lockout and all. I must say I've never seen oil look like that before it had separated like oil and water.
Maybe it was oil and water...
