Hi Everybody! Thanks for all your great recommendations.
Yep, I'm an XC rider. Not thrilled with DH, BUTTTTTTTTT!!

My plans have made a slight change. For the 3 days before I start work, it looks like I'm going to head over to my good friend's place in Bodfish. Last time I visited, I mentioned the Cannel trail. He's done it several times. He's a world class rock climber and a lot fitter than I am, but I don't think he's as technically good on an mtb as I am. He's got a broken down $300 bike, and is thinking of buying a new one before the ride.

He's worried it'll be too hot. I get the impression it's mostly downhill, but he says there's some up.
When I return to Santa Barbara, I've scribbled down all the recommendations that you guys have made. Now I have to head to the trail reviews for more details!
I should be able to get something in after work. And, I'm trying to convince my company that they want me to stay out for part of the next week, too, in which case I'll have a 2nd weekend, that one staying in SB and not re-meeting up with my friend.
As far as hooking up with you guys.... I'm not a beginner, but I'm not hugely technically skilled, and I do pedal slowly. "Casual" is what we call it here with MORE*. I always sweep on our group rides because I'm so slow. I'm pretty good of an outdoorswoman, though, so I tend to go off by myself a lot. Tomorrow I'm thinking of doing a mountain here in VA. It's a couple thousand feet of fireroad up, then a few hundred vertical feet of rocks which I push my bike up over, then I walk down another mile of rocks before I fly for miles of singletrack back to the parking area. It's one of our tougher trails, but I've done that one 3 times (first one solo). So I doubt your moderate trails will kill me. But I'm afraid you'd get frustrated with me pedaling slower than you guys do.
One more question. All our trails are nearly 100% in forest. So I wear sleeveless jerseys in the summer. Do you guys wear short sleeves or sleeveless and slather on SPF 50 every half hour? If I were hiking, I'd wear a long sleeved, light weight shirt for sun protection, but I've never cycled under such conditions (except for some 2 hr rides in Utah one August) :madmax: <not mad, but on fire!>
Thanks for all your info. I'm looking forward to the visit.
