Hey, it is for the fat bike so it is relevant here, right?
The deore M525 disc rear hub I'm running on juggernaut right now sucks. The freehub body doesn't run true to the axle, which does run true to the hub body (impairs shifting) and it was that way when new. The rotation angle before engagement (25 degrees?) is marginally to bad in the technical stuff in the summer, and intolerable in winter. I've never had a hub that made me complain about that before. Even the old STX-RC, etc low level parts were better. It does seem to work above 0F even with the standard issue grease, etc. I thought it was just a bad one, but I've got two, and they both seem identical.
What do people like for budget fat bike rear hubs? Must be 135 mm spaced, 36 hole, 6 bolt disc mount. Durability>>> weight. Will just going up to XT do the trick with engagement freeplay and overall quality?
You have to get the latest generation of shimano hubs to get the engagement improvement. The old ones were 16pt, the new are 36 pt. There is a SLX designed for 29ers that is only 32 pt though. The bad thing about the new hubs is they only come in centerlock.
