Shoreline Trail

I've taken lots of begnners there. There isn't a lot of elevation change and the terrain is not too rough. It still is a trail with twists and turns and if you start at one end of the park and go to all the way in one direction and back you can get about 10 miles in. You can get a pretty decent map at the Back Ranch Meadows Entrance Ranger Booth. If you approach the park from the Marin civic Center direction you can park on the road at a pull out and walk to the booth. If you rider further into the ravine there is water.
The Shoreline trail offcially starts to the left of the benches over a small bridge and goes through a couple of switchbacks. If you go right you are on the Bayview Trail and this climbs up. I'd suggest that you save Bayview for another time.
Take Shoreline in and out of ravines and around ridges for about 5 miles. When you get to a series of descending switchbacks overlooking a Ranger Trailer you are near teh end of where you want to go. You can cross the lot and go over to the other side for about 3/4 mile. You will probably want to turn around before you descend past the grove of eucalyptus.

i'd agree with what berkeley mike had to say above. i've taken my wife and son in there a bunch of times. with my wife we stay along the shoreline which is flatter and easier. not that doing a full loop up and around is really hard but there are technical sections which are tricky and can be a bit scary (big dropoffs down the slope) for beginners. also if you go during primetime there's a decent amount of traffic which can also be cumbersome for a beginner.

have fun, it's the best trail i know of for beginners. would love to find more, almost everything in the bay area involves decent climbing which seperates skill and age levels...
