Looking to purchase a new rear derailleur and wanted to make sure I purchase
the right Shimano rear derailleur with the correct capacity. Using a 44,32,22 front
chainring combo and a 34-11 cassette gives me a capacity of 45t.

Shimano offers the XT M770 rapidrise long derailleur in a 45t capacity and a
XTR M970 long rapidrise with a 43t capacity. So the logic choice would be to
purchase the XT because of the 45t capacity. What surprised me is that my
current old XTR M960 derailleur is a 43t capacity, so what is confusing is
that given my gear ratio above, it should work with a 43t capacity derailleur,
but it has for years. And worked great I should add, very smooth shifting.

So I’m guessing I could use the XT or XTR and be just fine ? The XT might
work a little better because of the 45t capacity ? Confusing stuff help !! :madman:

There's a FAQ about this at the top of the thread. Bottom line is you probably never used your 22 x 11 combo, so the chain never went slack. You should generally avoid cross chained ratios like that anyhow, so either will work.
