My shock is in for pushing and will hopefully be back next week. Since everything is going to be apart, this is a good time for a major tune up.

My question is the bearings. I have a hammerhead 100-X, 2005 model. It have ~3K of miles on it. I have never really done anything with the bearings. Is there a good rule of thumb on servicing? Do they need it? Do they need replacement?

Just wondering the protocol on those.

When you lift the bike thru the saddle or seatpost, do you feel some movement or "play" of the rear triangle? You can also try to move the rear wheel when lifting the bike.

If there is play then it is also time to replace.

I just went through a similar thing. I decided to do a thorough cleaning and I took everything apart. After taking the swing arm apart I realized that some of the bearings were crunchy or I couldn't turn them at all. I decided to replace all the bearings. If you are not mechanically inclined I would recommend having a shop replace the bearings for you. I had to make a bearing press with some all thread and washers. I had a little trouble on one side of the main pivot. I could not press the bearings in straight and it took some finessing, I wrecked one set and had to buy another set of replacements. If the bearings are the originals from 2005 I would probably replace them depending on the conditions you ride in. There is more info on this site and on titus' site on how to perform the replacement. You can buy a bearing kit from enduro at this site. http://www.enduroforkseals.com/id55.html There is a Racer X kit if you scroll down.
