I own a 2010 Stumpjumper 29er ht and I would like to convert my existing drivetrain into a 1x9. Would the race face narrowdide single chain ring 30T work with my Shimano FC-M542 crank?

yeah, 9-sp 4-bolt 104 bcd should run you $30-40 on average.

It has a 64/104 bcd. So yes...you can attach a narrow wide ring on there. You'll need the 104bcd ring.
