Race face Deus Cranks crank pullers?

885 Views 4 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  budswaller
I just recently intalled a new set of Deus cranks with the X-type bb. I just took it out for a ride and now it creaks when I pedal under load. Is there a crank puller I can buy for this? I am trying to take this off, but I am not sure how. I am sure there is a crank puller, but I don't know which one to buy. Also what could be causing this creak. This is brand new.

Thanks,:madman:

The 10mm reverse threaded cap on top of the 8mm crank bolt is the self-extractor. Just turn the 8mm bolt counter clockwise and it all should come off. Remember to regrease everything when you re-install.
I removed both 8mm and 10mm.

The cranks do not slide off after I removed both 8 and 10mm. It's on there pretty good. Any other way?

Put them both back on, then first back out the 8 mm against the 10mm it should "push" the crank off the spline.
Just like ratt said. Put the plastic one in, and then just turn the actual crankbolt. It will press against that plastic one and force the arm off the spindle. Creaking, I would bet is a problem with spacers, or bearings themselves.

Be sure to pull/push on your crankset horizontally...ie put bike in rack with crankset chest level and then try to push/pull them. I did it by grabbing onto the chainrings where they meet the crank arm, finger in each slot between chainring bolts, and pulled it towards me. If you notice any movement add a spacer. If you don't notice any movement...it might be worthwhile to remove a spacer and then reinstall cranks and try the push/pull thing again. If it still doesn't move, then you had one too many spacers which could cause the creaking. I kept doing that process until I got play, and then installed one spacer and knew I had the cranks set where they needed to be. Too much preload is bad, and not enough is bad.

If that doesn't help, check pedals, check bearing cup tightness(did you grease them? might try teflon tape also).....and then look at bearings. There is a thread on here that details how to service them. They are notorious for coming from Raceface with not enough lube...ie bone dry. I had a noise in my bearings when new and I just repacked the bearings and noise was gone.

Forgot to mention, if removing spacers do it from the non drive side first, to not mess up your chainline. Probably obvious, but thought I would add that.

Good luck
