Anyone know what the 10mm bolt on the drive side crank arm for the atlas cranks is for? I've installed the cranks using the 8mm allen (and also removed the cranks by loosening the 8mm allen bolt), but don't understand what the point of the 10mm cover is. Can someone explain and tell me if I'm doing something wrong?

It is designed so the crankarm is self extracting. If the 10mm cover was not there, you would have to use a crank puller to remove the arm after removing the 8mm bolt.

I'm new to this, but I installed the cranks and had to take them off. But all I used to take them off was to loosen the 8mm bolt, and the crank slid off the spindle as I was loosening (never had to touch the 10mm bolt). Am I doing something goofy to not use that 10mm bolt?

When you are loosening the 8mm bolt, it is pushing on the 10mm cap, so it is effectively pushing the crankarm off the spindle as your loosening the 8mm bolt. That is why it slid off so easy. You should not have to touch the 10mm cap at all unless it comes loose.
