I'm looking for a new shock for my hardtail. (A 1998 IF.)
I'm currently riding a Marzocchi Atom Bomb, but after renting a bike for a weekend, I've realized that shocks have improved a lot over the last 8 years.

I'm looking to race (so I want a lockout) and do general trail riding.

Any suggestions as to which shock would be better, an R7 Super or a Sid Team?

If I go with the R7, should I get the 100mm travel or will that mess up my bike's geometry?

Thanks, pat

I raced a SID World Cup a few years back and loved it; however, I have an R7 (without the remote lockout...I just flip it at the crown) and am enjoying it so far too. They seem very similar to me in terms of performance. I don't weigh alot, but many reviews have stated that the R7 is much less flexy than the SID.

As for geometry and fork travel, I'm not sure on a 98 Indy Fab. It may throw off things quite a bit running 100mm. There has to be some thread out here on that issue.
Good luck!

I was never a fan of the old SID--I swapped it off of my old bike. My new bike has the R7 Super w/ Lockout..it's a great fork so far! Very stiff-good steering--I have the 100mm version-still feels racy.

As for your geometry...with the IF I'd guess it's custom-so who knows (other than the guys who built it.

My thoughts, for what they're worth is that most racy hard tails could use an extra 20mm (if you check a ruler you'll see how minor 20mm really is btw) of Head Angle softening.

The R7 is not a particularly tall fork either so I can't imagine the extra 20mm would be anything else other than very welcomed.

Good point, there's a chance the 100m R7 isn't much taller (axle-to-crown) than the 80mm Atom bomb.
