There should be 2 springs
one on each end with the smaller end facing inside.

Quick Release question
I have quick release wheels on my Trek Mountain bike, and was wondering what side of the whole quick release system the spring goes on, I took off the wheel and didn't bother to look which side it was on, either the side of the QR handle or the side with the adjusting nut. Please help! Thanks!
