Quick Question on Popping Noise

696 Views 5 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  bikerd00d
First post, great forum! I'm still learning so please excuse the newbness.

I have a GT Avalanche 3.0 and about every 3-4 cycles of peddling, my gears "pop".. it makes the sound as if its changing gears but it's not. Throws me a little off balance because of the slippage. Any idea how I can fix this?

Possible barrel adjustment on the rear derailleur
Also, check to see if there's a kink in your chain. If there is, you should be able to see it.
lift your rear wheel off the ground and pedal it slowly. Watch and listen for the pop sound and see if you can see the chain catching on something or having a stiff link. It's best if you can pedal forward slowly so the freehub noise doesn't get in the way of hearing what's going on.
How old is the bike? If it's not new, it's possible that you have an excessively worn chain, cassette, or chain rings.
one of the chain links were stiff. oiled it up and i was ready to ride. thanks!
