Questionnaires at Spring Brook

They had a table set up on the upper part of Spring Brook with a questionnaire about the trail, any conflicts to report in the past six months, overall impressions. I mentioned the militant hiker I "dismounted and walked around because it's the law" from a few weeks ago. l also put down that it'd be just grand if they redid the sign so it can't be interpreted as bikers should only yield to hikers with dogs and actually define "yielding" straight out of the Open Space rulebook. If you're on Spring Brook today (don't know how long the table is going to be set up) it'd be good to get as many comments as possible from us bikers.

When I left a ranger and a lady manning the table were keeping watch on the trail. As I went down the "no dogs, it's the law" section of SB a nice looking runner with a dog off leash came from the other way. I just said "howdy" and wondered if she'd get ticketed. When I saw her on the other side she said she hadn't gotten a ticket. The ranger had just disappeared and the other one wasn't a ranger. Her lucky day. I told her she was doing everything wrong: dog on the no dog part of SB AND dog off leash the whole time. She had the usual reasons (I didn't see the sign, I'm new here, nobody told me) but I really didn't care... I just wanted to talk her is all

Pics of Spring Brook in the middle of our dry winter and now are included. What a difference multiple snow dumps and two months of steady rain can make on a landscape.

The first place I stopped to take a pic I waited and just listened to the birdies quietly chirping. Then I noticed there were about 30 dragonflies circling around in front of me, the early morning sun glistening off their wings. Pretty mesmerizing. Around and around they went for a few minutes and finally took off. I did get one lame pic of one...you try to get a pic of a dragonfly in flight 20 feet away ;)

And I saw something I've never seen before---an Ellsworth Truth with vee brakes. It's true.

I think the Truth has been around longer than "standard disc brakes" have...
Like purple anodization and biopace chainrings, the disc brake fad will pass as well :p

And nice catch on the dragon fly in the rainbow!
When was this ride? Looks like yesterday.

That table has been out there all week. We ran into it on Tuesday. I think I even got a solicitation to man it at one point.

I even mentioned your hiker incident to the person on Tuesday.

I think that Truth is a 2002.
Confessional: I have NEVER ridden SB in the daytime, so thanks for those pix!

My buddy has an Id with v-brakes.

I was out there around 8:30 this morning. I stressed to the person handing out the questionnaire that my "It's the law" hiker was the only malcontent I've encountered. I also stressed that bikers are always the good guys in any "confrontation" :D The booth wasn't set up because of any rash of incidents, according to her, just a yearly gathering of feedback.

I remember looking for vee brake bosses on my Burner frame when I first espied it at a Supergo in early 2005. I still got vees on my 2003 Sugar townie and my hardtail.

I have a few pics that have either one or more of those dragonflies in it...they look like miniature helicopters. Can anyone tell me how to crop a pic in Picasa 3 AND save the pic cropped? That way I could show you these bad boys up close and personal...and grainy and noisy, but....up at least closer. As it is I crop as needed, hit "Save a Copy" but it just saves the original.

True. This area is a breakthrough for Boulder and biking and they have a rigorous process of collecting opinions on their open space.

One of the crux issues on this section is that half the loop is dogs allowed and the other half not. It adds complexity in an already touchy issue. And of course you witnessed first hand the hiker. After your confrontation and riding the trail again on Tuesday, I cannot recall any section where a cyclist would have to dismount to yield to a hiker. As narrow as it is, it's plenty wide.

They were there starting last week and will be for four more weeks doing the survey.

I believe the "export" function will do this.

I figured it out. Two from Spring Brook and one from today's Picture Rock. At the quarry past the silo there was this cool zebra colored dragonfly defending his territory which happened to be a pool near the car.

Anybody have any hints as to how to best capture this guy in flight? You never know which direction he's going next, he turns on a dime, he seems to be everywhere at once.
you're not fooling anybody...

those are a couple of Robinson R44s...

Ain't miniaturization a wonderful thing? There was a whole squadron of these little guys doing maneuvers. They've also got the engines silenced pretty well, couldn't hear a thing but the birdies.
