You have to measure the eye to eye. That is how most conventional shocks are measured.
Yes, this is part of it. You need to measure the center of the mounting eye's of the shock. You will also need to know the stroke of the shock too. The stroke is the total compression of the shock. To measure your current shock's stroke, let out all of the air and then compress it completely and measure the eye to eye length. The difference between the two eye to eye measurements is the stroke.

Example:
7.875 x 2.00 is a shock with a fully extended eye to eye length of 7.875 and a stroke of 2.00 inches.

Some frames cannot use a different eye to eye or stroke as what was intended. My Yeti 575 is one of them. Others may allow the use of a slightly longer eye to eye or longer stroke. I'd recommend calling Rocky Mountain and ask them. It would suck to buy a new shock only to find out it won't work on your frame.

I'd buy a pushed Fox RP3 in the correct size for your bike. Tough to beat that deal.

Peace out.
