Hi,

I'm a rookie regarding bicycle mechanics and I might of made a $400 mistake. The hub on my new wheel is too short for the drop out.

I mistakenly bought a 190mm x 12mm hub instead of a 197mm x 12mm.
I had measured my old wheel hub and was sure it was 190mm. It's a thru axle hub with closed dropout.

Is it possible to correct the situation by adding a 7mm shim or maybe 2 shims of 3.5mm (one on each side) so that the brake rotor matches the caliper.
Is there a trick of the trade here that someone could teach me:)

Its entirely possible you could just get new endcaps to convert the 190mm quick release hub to 197mm through axle hub. What model hub is it?

Many 190/197 hub makes and models have end caps readily available to convert a 190 to 197 or vice versa. Look up the manufacturer and see if they offer the parts needed or contact them for the information. You're not dead in the water, just need the correct caps.

It is possible. You could just run spacers like when converting non-boost hubs to boost. Unfortunately those specific kits won’t work (fronts are 5mm and rears are 3mm), but you just need the proper ID and a reasonable OD, a 3mm rear brake spacer on a rear boost conversion kit is probably fine. Really, you’d just need a rear boost conversion kit and a 1mm spacer. Depends on how fancy you want to get, you could do a 4 and a 3, or maybe you could find two 3.5s, or maybe 7 and re-dish the wheel with no brake spacer.

It’s definitely possible.

Thanks everyone.., back to the drawing board
Put the dry erase marker down!! Look into the maker of the hubs and check with the loco bike shop. That can save you from having brake alignment issues as well as simplify the process.
