My first FS bike was a Proflex Animal. I loved the bike, mine was a 95 before they got the oil dampened rear shock, so no hope of replacing it. The suspension is designed to pull the back tire into the ground when in the small chain ring, which gives awesome tracking, but can give some kick back when climbing.

For some reason I can't get a bigger picture, but it looks like you have the coil spring on the rear, which is good, if it still has the oil damping. Does it have the girven fork? those were about the stiffest cross country for made.

The original proflex was one of the (if not the) first full suspension mountain bikes. My uncle still rides one with the carbon swingarm and the electronic rear shock, not sure if the electronics still work however.
