Has anyone tackled this? For the most part, the fattie is just a way to get outside on a nasty winter day. But my wife and I do track data and there are rides where it would be nice to capture this. My guess is that instantaneous power is very high at times.

She has a Cannondale SI crank on a Fat CAAD and I have a Race Face on a Farley 5. I've found power meter companies that make meters for those brands, but not for fatties.

Any experience in this area would be appreciated.

Wouldn't it be a simple arm swap?
It would be if someone made the arm to swap. This is my problem. I'm not finding any that are compatible with the cranks we have. The Cannondale Si crankarm on Stages website looks nothing like the arm on my wife's bike. And I have yet to find anyone that claims to make a left arm for a Race Face Cinch.

I am pretty familiar with the power meter options for all bikes. For fatties there are not many options due to spindle lengths of these bikes. Sram Eagle XX1 4iiii offers a factory installed left meter where you provide the crank arm, I think they offer a hologram factory meter for SI arms. For bikes like the farley that run Raceface cranks with the -3mm boost offset chainrings you could fit a Power2Max NG Eco. Another option is pedal based meters like the SRM or Garmin SPD pedals, but these are all crazy money.

I'm usually pretty good about research, and this is pretty much what I came up with... the Hollowgram arm is not the same as the crankarm on my wife's bike, but it might work. That NGEco is pricey, but an option. There is also something known as the Assioma Hack where you buy their pedals and use the spindles in SPD's or others.... We use Look, so not sure if those would work or not.

Anyway, thanks a bunch for the info. You confirmed what I already though. Not a lot of options.

If you get the pedals you can swap them around your bikes. They are expensive but you get more for your money.

I have power on my road bikes and trainer and find it helpful there. I put a stages on my full suspension bike because I found a used one cheap. It’s fun for the short climbs on the trail but it’s not actually useful. I can’t watch my power on the trail so it’s for post ride giggles. And I stop pedaling so often it’s not insightful.

I just got a fat bike and the thought has crossed my mind. If I could put a stages on it for 175$ or less I would. More than that and I would rather have carbon handle bars or something else I really don’t need

Totally agree. The only time a PM makes sense on an MTB is extended climbs... and then... I'm probably on my 18 lb. gravel bike.

I have had great success running SRM Power Meter's on various fat bikes for at least 9 years. See here: Di2 FTW 2017 & Fatback Ti, circa 2013 In the early days I made my own spindle, you can buy a SRM to fit her SI arms and use the stock spindle. The easiest way is to send her right crank arm to SRM in Colorado and they will attached the power meter to it, calibrate and send back to you.

I’m successfully running a Stages Cannondale SI Gen 3 power meter on a raceface 170 spindle paired with an SI crank arm. I bought the SI crank arms used off of @bcriverjunky (poster #2, thanks man!) and the power meter was on sale at Stages. I had to mess with some spacers to get the preload and chainline right, but it’s been flawless ever since I got it dialed.

Well... these two posts make me think that the least expensive solution is going to be a couple of these (on sale right now for $262US): GEN 3 STAGES POWER L | CANNONDALE SI POWER METER

Just need to check frame clearance.

I know nothing of power meters, but all C'dale arms (including the forged Si on your wife's bike) mount to the same spindle and have almost the same offset.

a bit late to the party, but same issue. I was about to pull the trigger on a Power2Max ng eco (race face turbine 30 spindle), but I prefer 30t chainrings (prefer oval, round fine too), and learned from absolute black it's impossible to run the 30t on a Power2max or quarq style chainring meter ... so back to square one

How about these? MTB pedal power meter.

The downside is that they cost about as much my bike!
yeah .. spendy. Especially since it would seem like the worst place for the meter - ie the pedals are by far the most exposed part of the bike, and fat biking is not exactly a sub-genre that enjoys clean trails :)

Cannondale SI with raceface spindle? what raceface spindle(s)? Perhaps I'm lost, i thought that these would be wholly incompatible??

I am on a RaceFace Turbine 30 mm, 190mm crankset ... are you saying I can just swap my crank arm for a Cannondale SI? That would be a great, relatively affordable solution!

Yep, you can just remove the raceface crank arms from your current spindle and swap in the Cannondale arms. The interface on the 30mm spindles are identical between brands. I’ve been running the Stages SI power meter on the RF spindle (mine is 170 but the 190 would work fine, too) for over a year in all conditions with no issues at all. Good luck!
