Got the Explosif

LBS just phoned me that he's got my Explosif frameset - will pick it up later on today. Still need to receive some parts though. (cranks, brake booster etc.) This would be the last addition to my stable of bikes HOPEFULLY, or at least, for the time being (can't foresee what'll happen in 10yrs time :D ) Will post pics in the near future.

My new Explosif

I just built up this 2001 Explosif. I had been riding a 95 Specialized Stumpjumper M2, with a set of Mag 21's, and they finally went. I spent a torturous couple months trying to find a replacement fork, and after a few dead ends I called up Kona (working at a bike store this summer) and asked if they had any Explosif's in a 20". They told me all they had was a 2001, and they didn't seem to realize (and niether did I at the time) that this year wasn't a steel frame, but a scandium one. I was dissapointed at first until they told me how much they were going to charge me (Less than a keg of beer) and how much the frame retailed for originally. I am broke as hell right now, so I had to build it on the cheap. I took some parts from my faithful stumpy (which will become a commuter next summer) and bought some stuff on the cheap and voila, my Explosif. Went for my first long ride today, and my god this thing handles like a dreamn. To say its flickable is a massive understatement. I'm now obssesed, and I am dying to get my hands on a steel explosif to build up when I get some more cash.

1997 MAX OR Columbus tubing. The ride is smooth as silk, especially with the custom built titanium fork made by James at Black Sheep Bikes.

Explosif 2006

i have been riding this for a few weeks now & enjoying it. it seems to just glide over singletrack, climbs easy & gets up to a decent speed when the track widens out or turns into road. it took me while to find a good steel frame here in Australia, i'm glad I chose a kona.

now for 3 green explosifs in a row:

I can't believe I'm the only one to post a root beer colored Explosif. It's the prettiest color in the whole bunch! :D

The rootbeer is not too shabby. I wanted either a blue or silver model, but the frame itself is only available in green for 2006. The color option is only on full builds.

hey mud'n'sweat,
i'm impressed with the Reba Race '06 (with pop loc) plush ride, very adjustable & stiff. set up with 80mm of travel which i found improved the geometry of the bike compared to 105mm of tralvel from the OEM fork. (the interesting thing about fork travel is when you read the KONA frame specs they indicate that the explosif is designed for 80mm forks yet fit a105mm fork?)
i'm not a small bloke (100kg+) & these forks cope really well with anything i've dished out to date. heaps better than the OEM Marz.gran fondo 1

unfortunately here in OZ, green is the only colour selection availble.

Awesome! I am running a 80mm fork on mine so I haven't felt it with 100mm on. It feels perfect now so I wanted to stay with the 80mm. I'm a clyde myself and lateral stiffness is very important. I think I'll end up going with that Reba pretty soon. Gotta sell off some parts to pay for it.

I've been thorougly impressed with the Reba Race. I have it set at 115mm on my Explosif and I'm not a small guy -- 220# when I'm loaded up for a ride. Easy to adjust, plenty stiff, fun to fiddle with while I close in on the perfect ride characteristics. I'm a long-time Marzocchi fan but the Reba has got me taking another look at RS's other products.

For those of you running an Explosif 2-9 with gears are you sliding the dropouts all the way forward?
gotta run mine most of the way back so the tire doesn't hit the front dur

greendream, i scored a Reba race on closeout yesterday for $315! I put it on last night and I absolutely love it so far. Very plush and responsive for an air fork.

I'd like to add that the Reba is a very easy fork to service. I have two (29'er versions) and both forks perform incredibly well!
