I'm still trying to decide what to do about an indoor trainer for this off-season, and I need to make a decision so I can get started. My latest idea is to get a bike like the Kona Jake The Snake cyclocross bike to use indoors with a trainer. This way I could use the bike that way in the winter, but then also ride it occasionally during the summer when and if the mountain bike is not rideable. My other thought was to purchase a dedicated spinner type bike that would sit in my little workout room.

Whats your setup? And if you had to do it over, would you get anything different?

I hate trainers, I really do. This year I have made the switch to rollers using my regular ol road bike and so far so good. Not quite as boring (yet) since I have to pay more attention to balance, body position, etc. It will all be worth it though. Lined them up with the TV for watching movies, race tapes, and all that other fun stuff.

I am using a Minoura Trainer and I just bought a new KHS Flite 500 roadie to use on it. I also have a set of rollers that I use for zone 1 rides. I bought the KHS so that I don't have to ride my good road bike in nasty weather or have to constantly clamp down on it with the trainer. I know that the trainer shouldn't hurt anything just don't want to take the chance of damaging my IF.

You need it all...

I've got a road bike that I switch between rollers and a trainer for the winter work. The rollers are easier mentally because you have to think while riding them and they are great for balance. The trainer is good for higher intensity work (threshold and above) but does nothing for balance or bike handling skills.

I've also put slicks on the mtn bike to ride on the rollers some, though I never ride the mtn bike on the trainer as it doesn't feel right. Between all these options riding in the basement isn't to bad.
