I used to ride rigid SS. The sus fork is nice in some ways, and not so nice in others. It is nice on descents and also when charging technical terrain. Climbing and overall weight are the drawbacks for me. The lock out is useful, but still not rigid.
Overall, I am starting to be of the opinion that the trade off is worth it. I gain speed on descents, and that makes up for the perceived climbing shortfall.
I went with an aluminum frame when I got the sus fork. Basically, there was little weight difference between a steel frame and rigid fork, and the AL frame with sus fork.
