Personally, I like all the sounds of nature as I ride. The sound of me, gasping for air as I slowly pedal up hill. The sound of the mountain lion giving chase. The sound of rocks flying off my tires an chipping the paint off my new bike. The muted thud of my body as it hits the ground after flying over the handle bars.
On second thought, music would be kinda cool... :D

I just did two rides the past two days with my ipod, and I love it when riding alone. I only use it when I am alone, and it makes the rides that much more fun. Also, I love it when you see a hill ahead and then your favorite song comes on. I usually just make a playlist called 'mtb energy' that I play and it has nothing but songs that pump me up while riding.

I recommend at least trying it, I think you will like it.

As for the flash based, mine never skips a beat fo flash isnt too necessary, but it does weigh less.

I used my iPod today when I rode to work. Probably not the safest thing to do while riding in traffic but the way I figure it when I get hit by a car I'm going to be messed up whether I hear them coming or not. I also seem to be more caucious, probably cause I don't want to die and have my wife standing over my body saying "I told you so!"

What's the best song to ride to?

For me it's "Eye of the Tiger!"... just kidding.

The new Wolfmother album is pretty good.

I am anti-headphones on the trial

how many of you listen to music while you ride? I have been thinking about it, but I have yet to do it.
That said, I'm not going to tell you not to do it. You're free to do what you want. A few thoughts, though:

1.) It is a distraction, no matter which way you cut it.

2.) Keep the volume low so you can hear what is going on around you. Lots of people say they do but I've seen lots that don't. It's real annoying trying to pass someone on a hill who can't hear me saying "on your left" etc.

3.) Depending where you are in the county, mountain bikers may not be looked upon too favorably by the local chapter of the Sierra Club and other trail users. Riding down the trail with headphones only feeds into their belief that we are a bunch of irresponsible neanderthals.

4.) This one is a bit more philosophical and I I'm not going to argue with you if you want to call bs - but think about whether or not you want to feed into the culture of constant electronic distraction. Music, television, etc. have their place, but I'd suggest to you that on the trial isn't one of them.

Don't mean to be preachy. Like I say, you're free to do what you want. Just my take on the situation.

I don't think hikers are *****ing about people on bikes with headphones. I think they just don't like people on bikes going balls out at 20+ mph past them and narrowly avoiding contact. When I see people on the trail I yeild and say "How's it going?". Some times I strike up a friendly conversation. If you want hikers to like the bikers then you need to show them that your are a human and not so lunitic who is going to kill them cause your trying to get your rocks off by going as fast as you can and you can't slow down to pass them safely.

With that said, I say if you think your ride is enhanced by music then rock on. Your out there to enjoy yourself. Just remember to be courtious to other.
