right now i'm wearing something like this from Teva...

and they work pretty good, but i'm wondering if theres anything else you prefer out there. Most of what i do is XC and i'm not a fan of clipless. I"m not the most skilled rider so i'm dismounting often expecially on steep rocky climbs. I"m going to be upgrading the pedals on my '07 Enduro SL to the specialized platforms with the little grips in them.

anyways what kinda shoes would you recomend?

I use Vans shoes which are intended for skateboarding. They have a bunch of ridges on the inside and then the pattern on the rest of the rubber sticks like glue to the pedals.
Worth a try...you can get them really cheap too

i was thinking about a pair of skater shoes, but the only problem is alot of parts where i ride, some hiking is involved (steep rocky climbs). Stuff i dont have the skill to ride over. So i need a shoe that can double as a hiking shoe.

I rock Vans because hardly anyone else makes good shoes for platforms in sizes above 13.
I'd rock 510s in a heartbeat if my feet were two sizes smaller.

vans work just fine for me. (including while carrying the bike, you totally don't need hiking type shoes)

5.10's and liking them. The hike/bike well also. The problem with a hinking shoe is the bottom is uneven ( lugs for traction )and can feel strange on a pedal (for me) . I have had great luck with sk-8 style shoes for years but the price is the same as 5.10. The sticky rubber is great, doesnt feel much different than my spd's ( clipless) but if your doing a bunch of hiking may want to put a insole in them and may want to steer clear from shoes that can be SPD also because they use a shank in them that is stiff and makes hiking even worse.

I used 661 Lauch shoes for about a year and some skate shoes but recently got 5.10's and they are awesome. So sticky I have to place them on my pedals not just screw them around for placement.

Columbia hiking boots. Yes they are absolute crap on the bike, don't put yourself through it. I switched to clipless and never considered anything else when climbing but still ride flats when I know there will be more hiking involved and the Columbias are great for slogging up the hilll.

Serious Question, not a flame.

Why platforms and not clipless? I've used clipless pedals for years, my kids ride on 525's (convertible pedals with a bit of a platform and SPD) with the springs adjusted loose and they love them. I don't get what it is that people DON"T like about clipless?

I agree, for AM/XC clips are better. However, I like platforms MUCH more for dh/fr. I feel that I can bail/dab when needed. Also, endos on clips are painful  :yesnod:
Besides, clipless give you bad habits. When I made the switch to platforms, I realized that I was just "standing" on the bike instead of pumping the terrain with the legs. Its awkward at first, but it will make you a faster rider in the long run
