Planning a trip, weather in a few places?

I am looking to do a trip to Goose, to Moab, and maybe to Fruita around (give or take a week) the new year.

I plan to take a motorhome with 5 buddies.

What do you think the weather would be like? Maybe a little cold, but what are the chances of snow that time of year?

Speaking for the Fruita/Moab part, odds of snow are pretty high. That said, you can get lucky that time of year. It is impossible to predict. For a big trip with five buddies I'd aim for March. Some trails are rideable with snow, but some aren't, and if there is a big storm anytime within a few weeks, it is cold enough for it to hang around.

I hear Sedona's nice....

So it would be one of those 'wait until you see the forecast a day before you go' kind of trip........

I suppose Sedona would be good too, but are there all that many trails there?

moab and fruita are likely iffy that time of the year. Too difficult to predict this far out.

However, Goose and St. George area has some really nice riding that is good most of the year. There is always Goose of course, but also the JEM trail is nice (smooth singletrack through the desert adn climbing some mesas) as is Slickrock Swamp (up on the border of Zion Natl Park in Rockville). If your heart is set on Moab, then I would wait until you can predict the weather or wait until March. However, if you are not set on going to Moab, St. George is really nice. Living in UT, I personally go to St. George a lot more often for riding than I do Moab. It has great stuff for the DH bike as well as the XC bike.

Check www.utahmountainbiking.com for further information on trails, etc. before you plan your trip out.

Hey Thanks for the tip!

I would have to go through St George to get to Moab, and it sounds like that would be a great place to stop anyway.

Are there any good places to camp near the trails? I just kinda like Moab because it seems like the trails are centrally located, and it would be easy to set up camp and ride for a few days.

How far is thunder mountain from st george?

Southwest Utah and Sedona are much safer bets then Moab in January. Both of these locales average 5-10 degrees warmer in the winter months than Moab, with fewer snow worries.

Thunder Mountain is about an hour and a half north of St. George, but it will not likely be rideable in the winter. Your best bet is to stay down by St. George and not try and head up to Cedar City or anywhere N or E of that. The desert basin around St. George does have really good riding, especially in the winter. Depending on what type of bike you guys ride, there are more trails as well. If you have DH bikes or FR bikes, there are really good rides around the area. If XC, excellent rides as well. Little Creek Mesa is always fun as well. As I said in my previous post, check out the site I gave you. It has all the information you will likely need. If you want some DH/FR trail advice, drop me a PM. There is some really great stuff down there as well.

Have fun and good luck. Also - if you need parts or some trail advice, stop in and say hi to Kong at Desert Cyclery. It is on Bluff street across from the Wagon Wheel restaraunt. He is a cool guy and has always done great work for me when I have been down there in the past.
