I'm looking for recommendations of places in the area that would provide a nice challenge to a novice/beginner rider but not so much of a challenge that it discourages further outings. Any suggestions.....

Sorry about that. DC/Baltimore area. The 495 and 695 corridors would be ideal. I'm in Ellicott City, MD.

Good beginner stuff:
Rockburn park in Elkridge
Fairland park in Burtonsville
Lower loop of Loch Raven (Seminary rd)
Robert E. Lee park in Balto. City

Once comfortable there, some of the parts of Avalon near Rockburn aren't too difficult.
