So I just got my latest copy of mountain bike magazine and they had a blurb about mynesweeper tire inserts.

This got me thinking (yeah I know) Why not just use regular old pipe insulation foam. Cut to length and put in the tire before mounting?

anyone ever try this? Does it work?

And yes I know It may be penny wise and pound foolish.

Having used pipe insulation for it's intended purpose, I'd think that stuff would be way too soft. You'd need a foam with higher density, like those pool 'noodles' they sell at Walmart.

Pipe insulation is how it all started! The only problem is ensuring that the ends are properly secured to each other (if not the have the tendency to create a lump in your tire. Gorilla tape and small zipties are your friend here

Having tried it... its worth it if you absolutely need to save $90, but its a messy/frustrating job to get done correctly. In the end its only about $15 to try.. so go for it!

Just shop PB. Lots of lightly used inserts for sale. There was incentive to try DIYclosed cell foam options when inserts first came out, but after years of market saturation there's always deals to be found on the used market.

some pipe/noodle foam can stand up to the compression, some foams will pack down and crumble faster than
a commercial bike tire insert...[still cheap to experiment with]

one thing inserts sort out for you, is it the right kind of foam hopefully
