Philcentric EBB, what cranks to use?

The large outer diameter of the Philcentric EBB interferes with any kind of lockring or granny ring bolt mounts. All "1x" cranksets that I could find have mounts for a granny ring. Does anyone know of a dedicated (no bolt mounts for a granny ring) 1x mtb crankset with an integrated spider AND works with a 24mm BB (Shimano-style outboard BB, GXP)? TIA

Many (most) 1x cranks employ a direct mount ring.
Right?
No such thing as a granny on a 1x crank.

Yup.

I've searched and searched but it seems cranks with integrated spiders that are marketed as 1x also have mounts for a granny so you can run it 2x. I can find true/dedicated SS cranks but none (that I could find) are compatible with GXP or Shimano BB.

Pictures would be good as others have done what you are trying to do:

Also as Sparty noted a direct mount ring will not have the mounting bolts for the granny. Race face makes the Aeffect. It's a 24 mm spindle - read shimano style BB with a direct mount ring.

I suppose I could've pulled off my xt cranks from another bike and done a mock up but I just took the rep's word for it. Apparently, any kind of lock ring for spiderless cranks will interfere. I was hoping someone on here has had the same dilemma and potential advice for a workaround.

Now that I've seen that picture, I wonder if the granny bolts were ground down for clearance. The Philcentric EBB looks like it's about the same dimensions as the Ekzentriker that's pictured. I've read about people gravel bike cranks (Shimano GRX) with these but I sure as hell won't run a 40t chainring on a SS mtb.

Anyway, looks like nothing modern works with these things. It might just turn into an expensive paperweight. I'll bust out the calipers and measure clearances tonight and maybe pull off a crank arm from my other bike if the measurements look promising. Thanks for playing!

I know, I know ... I'm kind of an mtb Luddite but I keep up with relevant technology.

Definitely believe the rep over some random guy on the Internet. :) aka me.

I haven't dealt with the Phil EBB. There is a lock ring on the RF I linked to above, but it would touch the plastic insert on the ball bearing, which I think would be OK as this will spin with the crank.

I'd send the rep an email and ask him if the RF Aeffect would be OK. It's a decent crank. I run one on my Chameleon. But I use a regular BSA 73 mm BB.

Good luck and keep us posted. I'm curious how this turns out.

Hmmm, I would think that since the lock-ring for a Shimano direct-mount is designed sit against the bearing on a Shimano bottom bracket, it would also be fine with the Philcentric?

Is it possible the Phil directions pre-date the Shimano direct-mount system?

If the ribs on the spider in the picture below would interfere, you could go with an aftermarket chainring - Wolftooth for example

Indeed!
So, I did some measuring and it sure looks like there won't be any interference with a Boost XT m8000 as the small ring mounts are flush with the part of the spider that contacts the polymer part of the BB cup face. There's about 2 to 3mm of horizontal clearance at the points where the ring mounts are and about as much as 5mm overlap with the EBB. This is probably more forgiving when dirt and debris gets in there vs. a direct mount crank IF the lockring diameter is at least the same as the EBB's as that will be a larger arc ( a whole circumference, in fact) of overlap with mere millimeters of clearance.
It's not a perfect solution but should be worth a try.
On a side-note, the philcentric EBB should work with a gravel crankset with a larger small ring BCD like the GRX, as long as your frame has a 63mm BB shell. Probably not a setup for lots of days on double black trails but the philcentric EBB won't hold up to that kind of riding for very long either.

I'll still try to look for a direct mount crank to check dimensions before getting the boost xt cranks. Thanks to everyone for all the input!

Pictures are from my full sus with a boost xt crankset. The Philcentric EBB cups have same thickness as the Shimano BB cups that are pictured.
