I have a chance to buy a rear 7 speed hub labeled "Shimano Parallax" only. I've never heard of them before and was wondering if they're legit and if they're any good. Can these also support an eight/nine speed cassette? I know that 8 sp chains can work for 6/7/ or 8 speed cassettes.

You can not put a 8 or 9 speed cassette on a 7 speed hub.

Shiggy is right, but you can change the freehub to an 8/9 speed and then run run a cassette with the extra gears. But you will also have to find a shimano freehub for the right price. The parallex hubs were good quality shimano parts.
