Don't know if anyone knows anymore, but I believe that there was an article in the local paper that was suggesting the horses / mountain bikes are going to be banned from national parks in the area? Can anyone shed any light? I'm hoping that I was misinformed! There are now big protest signs on the local horse clubs against this decision.

It has been in the local paper for the last couple of weeks. As Mrs H said, no mention of MTB, just horses. Conservationist seem to be targeting horses as the main cause of weed infestation, erosion etc. Panton Hill & Kangaroo Ground are quite a big horsey area so the horse people will be out in numbers.
How does this impact MTB? I'm not sure but hopefully the Council will see the difference between horse riding & MTB'n.
The Council ban is only in certain areas and they claim they have counted this by providing other areas for horse use.

Be interesting to hear from some of the other locals.

No need to worry as far as MTB access goes, at least at this stage, though two tracks are to be closed off to MTBs. They are the two eastern tracks in Bunjil that connect Rodger Rd to Long Gully Rd. One of these is no fun to ride anyway - loose, eroded, ugly, fenced on both sides of the trail. It's a pity that the other one - Mineshaft Tk - is to be designated walkers-only but it's hard to argue against it when the trail goes directly down a loosish steep fall line at an angle greater than that recommended by IMBA.

Edit: The management plan concerns only the Panton Hill Bushland Reserve System managed by Nillumbik Council. It doesn't affect National Parks (e.g. Kinglake), Parks Vic land (e.g. Boomers Reserve), Melbourne Water land (e.g. Sugarloaf Tk) or other council land (e.g. verge trails).
