On impulse, I emailed Panaracer to see if they would be making a 29er version of the Fire XC (nice loose rock tire).
The response:

You are clear. Other details cannot be discussed yet!
Mmmm, Panaracer staggered & interconnected side knobs ala the Fire, Yumm! Hopefully in a TRUE 2.2" width without resorting to slapping them on a unicycle rim for the extra spread.
I ran the Fire for 5 years here in the Norcal area. Worked great year round. That was before I drank deep of the 29er kool-aid.
I hope whatever they make, it won't overlap with one (and therewith immediately over a dozen) of the current offererings. No fair knob+decent rolling. Low knob-great rolling, or big knob-sick grip-great mud shedding. Makes it worth putting it on the tire pile, I didn't even get the Schwalbe or Maxxis, or IRC Mythos, they just overlap too much.
