Does anyone have problems with Klein Palomino (2003 I believe?) rear brake vibration/noise? I have used three different wheels with the same problems. Seems if I have the quick release not so tight it goes away but then I risk popping my wheel out of the drop outs. Perfect bike for me otherwise.....

My 04 vibrates badly with Hayes brakes fitted. I thought it was just the rear triangle doing it, but i've since put the brake onto a Klein Attitude frame and the same brake vibrates even more so now.

Its to the point it can hurt my feet the vibrations are that bad.

If your Palomino has the bolted on disk brake caliper mount, as the chainstays do not have disk tabs welded on, there is your answer. That thing makes a horrible vibration. See if your dealer will warranty the rear triangle if you are the original owner.
If you have the welded disk brake tabs on the chain stay, make sure that you are using a Resin/Organic pad, the disk tabs are true, machined & straight, and a good skewer-Shimano XT.

Same trouble on my Palomino

I have two bikes here. One is a carbon Fuel 98, the other is a Palomino and neither has ISO disc tabs welded to the frame. Both bikes have a new set of Hayes HFX-9s, both use the Trek bolt-on disc brake adaptor. One has the stock Bontrager hub and rim, and the other has a new XT M756 hub and Mavic rim with XT QR skewer.

No matter which wheel I use on each bike, the Palomino develops a vibration under moderate to light braking that shakes the whole bike, and the Trek does not. Both brake systems are identical in spec and age. I have changed the pads on the Palomino to the Hayes semi metallic from the stock sinterized pads, but there was no change in the vibration. Running the QR skewer tight or loose, or XT or Bontrager doesn't change the vibration condition.

It seems to have been suggested earlier in this thread that there was a brake therapy style adaptor (or not) that may help remove this condition. Can someone elaborate?

i've just changed the palomino's brakes to a set of Hope Mono M4s.

Still in the bedding in stage, but so far, the Hopes haven't so much as made the slightest squeak of vibration yet. Time will tell.

As for the old palomino's hayes brakes, well they went onto the attitude's frame. I've since fully rebled the system and cleaned the pistons. The whole brake feels a lot better now and the vibrations have dramatically reduced / gone.

I wish I could elaborate

It is really a simple fix. ANY AND ALL Klein dealers should be able to fix the issue. It was a piece of aluminum that was 3/4 inch wide by about 8-12 inches long and had a twist on one end that had hole in it. you would bolt the twisted end into the brake boss I think.

AHH, here is the shop in San Diego that was fixing them.

Solution Found

So maybe its not ideal, and certainly its not pretty, but it works. This strap damps vibration in the seatstay to the point where it is now very difficult if not impossible to reproduce the vibration.

I will look into fabricating a strut like the one described earlier in this thread at some point. The local Klein dealer recommended I try cleaning my brake pads with alcohol

Same size rotor?

The Mag Carbon uses the same rotor, caliper, and adaptor that I have on this HFX-9. The Mini probably had a smaller rotor, maybe changing the length of the harmonic wave. I got this from Brake Therapy today:

Here's a pic of our Brake Therapy retrofit disc

>> assembly. The back rod end

Hi, This is Brian from Therapy Components, the guy quoted in the post above.

But You Klien/Fuel owners don't need the whole Brake Therapy. We sell a shorter rod, that extends from your upper brake caliper bolt to the v-brake boss, thus solving the problem. We called it the Fuel Stabiliser when we came out with it.

$50, about 60 grams. Guaranteed to kill the problem.
