Out on Long Island for a couple days

1816 Views 13 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  Pasta4lnch
I'm looking for any suggestions about places to ride on Long Island. I'll be staying in Holbrook for a couple days back to back weeks and figured someone might be able to point me in the right direction.

Any suggestions welcome.

Thanks!

When will you be on the island?

Glacier ridge and Overton are both only a few minutes from Holbrook and are both really good trails for what long Island has in regards to topography. Glacier is more of a flow trail with around 15 miles and 1.2k feet of climbing. Overton has less climbing, a good mix of flow, elevation and minor tech(small rock garden for example)

Meadowlark(East Northport) Hempstead harbor woods(Port Washington) and Cunningham(queens) offers more of tech type riding. But all are a bit of a travel from Holbrook. Cunningham also offers multiple pump tracks.

Thanks for the suggestions. I just rolled in tonight and will be here until Thursday. I'll be back next Monday to Wednesday. I'll look into Glacier Ridge tomorrow, it's just a few minutes from where I'm staying.
Feel free to shoot me a message if you have any questions or want to be shown around, I may be available. I am a trail ambassador for CLIMB(concerned long Island mountain bikers)

Not sure what your schedule looks like but I'm going to ride tomorrow morning around 9:30. I brought my gravel bike this time, next week I'll bring a mountain bike.

Glacier and Overton are not gravel bike friendly.

Rocky Point is probably the one to go to if you want gravel friendly. The entire trail is around 21 miles and I'd say about 16 of it can be ridden on a gravel bike. Mainloop is 11 miles.

Thanks for the suggetions. I hit Glacier Ridge and had a very enjoyable time. I missed a couple loops but hit most of it without doubling back. Got a little pressed for time but found the trails fun and twisty. Maybe I'll hit them up again next week.

Cheers!!

Happy you had a good time. Sorry I was unable to join, I had some stuff to do earlier.

It's pretty amazing how many miles of well-maintained trails there are between Suffolk/Nassau counties, glad you were able to get some riding in.
Fat biking on the beaches?

Is that a thing out there now?

I'd totally do that....except for the $50 parking fees. WTF.
There are no fees between Labor day and Memorial day. If you want to check out a great beach ride go to Sandy Neck on route 6A on the Sandwich/Barnstable boarder. You can ride 7 miles out to the end and back, and you can ix it up by riding on the inner/protected marsh side, out on the northern beach side, or on the horse trail which goes through the middle and is a rare "maritime forest". There are a couple places where you can have a blast in a huge sand half pipe about 100 yards long. Very few people out there, but in the fall its a good idea to wear some orange blaze.

I'm bringing my mtn bike for M-W next week, although it is looking like rain.

Not sure about $50 parking fees (though I totally wouldn't be surprised) but there is ton of beach riding. I actually like it better in the winter. The ground is frozen and you sink in a bit less. Also less people. Belle Terre is my fav, but there are many...
