Funny!!! I got into IT while waiting for the Maryland State Police Dept Academy class to start. The IT money got good to me and I had to dodge the police recruiters calls for weeks while I made up my mind. I chose IT. Sometimes I wonder if I shoulda been a cop instead.

Couple questions for a study:

1) What IT certifications do you have?

** Currently none. In the 1990's I was cert-ed in Cisco stuff, Exchange Server, Novell, DEC Unix. Although I think education is excellent, I think certs are highly overrated. I haven't hired anyone with more than a cert or two in years. I just don't care because I know certs are ******** when it comes right down to doing your job well.

2) Where did you obtain those certifications?

** All over. Colleges and MSCE training centers. Any place that is part of their money-grubbing schemes. That's what it is you know... a pyramid scheme...

3) What is your current job title?

** Director of Technology and Engineering

4) What salary bracket are you in?

a) 35,000-45,000
b) 46,000-55,000
c) 56,000-65,000
d) 66,000-75,000+

** e) $100K+/yr

5) How many years of experience do you have in the IT field?

Professionally I started in 1991 admining GOPHER's and doing Unix work. 1993 I was in college admin-ing Novell / Windows 3.1 networks. 1995 I headed up the ATM (async tranfer mode) research on campus. 1997 I left for the private sector during the Internet boom. Started my own engineering company in 1999. Sold it in 2001. I have been working at my current position ever since.

Look... when hiring someone, we judge you how you look and how you answer question. If we like you, we give you some sort of written test and make sure you piss clean. Then if you get through that, you are hired for 6mo. If you do well, you stay. If you don't, you are gone.

I can toss a golf ball and hit 200 MCSE's. I'll be damned if I can find one that can handle a real problem and come up with a creative, workable solution. Invest in great people, and your life will be easy. Invest in ******** tests and certs, and your life will be explaining **** to people.
