I just looked it up and the startlist for Tokyo has 38 people on it for men and women.

It must be nice for these pros to have such a small field! This is probably one of the few elite MTB races where you could realistically win from the third row.

I wonder if the pace will be less extreme because getting the hole shot matters just a little less in this race?

Also: It's gonna be real weird with no spectators!

The MTB venue is allowed 50% capacity or 10,000 peeps max as its not in the Tokyo precinct, its in Izu at the Cycling centre that includes the Velodrome. This place is about 100km or so from Tokyo.
Much smaller field than a UCI WC race but we as TV spectators will hardly notice as the tv coverage always focusses on the front of the race

One last prediction, Fluekiger will use his fine performance this year to score a contract with a major manufacturer. Even though he's 32, he's got a few good years left, and if we wins a medal as I'm predicting, hopefully they'll show him the money and he signs with Scott or Specialized.
This past offseason there was a rumor that he would join Specialized. It was reported on a Spanish webiste mostly dedicated to MTB. At some point I thought it was true due to his good friend Florian Vogel is in already on the team and also Mat Fluck's Instagram account stopped showing pictures of his bikes for quite a while. It all turned out to be rumors and he stayed with Thomus with his also good friend Ralph Naef and more cheddar in his pocket. I think this was the only rumor said website didn't hit the target. All this was occurring while Sarrou was all but signed at Specialized but Gerhard wasn't confirmed yet.

Looks like weather isn't gonna be as hot as predicted ? About 30 degrees
Humidity is the killer. 30 and humid is unpleasant.

Great quote in the news today from Thomas Bach, ICO president, stating that cancellation "was never an option". I read that as him saying that it doesn't matter how many people are contracting covid-19, doesn't matter how many people are dying, doesn't matter what the risk is to the athletes and the general public, so long as the games proceed. What a dumbass. I'm not saying I have a strong opinion yet about whether the games should or shouldn't proceed, but this exemplifies what a bunch of twisted souls the IOC are.

Maybe best way would really be to cancel the whole thing, as things simply won't work out fair way. Someone might be denied of once in lifetime chance to win medal because he or she would have false positive test (too late to do anything once real test results are back as race is already over by then), or because he or she's in quarantine due "high risk contact" or... But then again, I said same last autumn on start of skiing World cup season, and it more or less turned out just fine on the end, so what do I know :)

They should be postponed to next year. However that should have happened a month ago, not now where almost everyone is there already.

That looks right to me, might flip 2 and 3 on each as I think it's a power course.
I agree with both of you, but to play this game I should offer an alternate (at least for silver and bronze)
so
1 MvDP
2 Flueckiger
3 Nino

1 Lecomte
2 Linda Indergand
3 Rissveds

According to the PinkBike preview, the forecast for the women's race Tuesday is for a thunderstorm in the morning before the race. I think the baseline case is that everybody will have at least one crash or incident of some sort, and it could be a race of attrition. Based on this, I'm going to pick Evie Richards and Jolanda Neff to medal, but I think there is a really good chance that we'll see upsets and surprises in the women's race results. Not sure about the men. I think MVDP is still going to be strong.

I'd never write MvdP off - he's done too many things that seem impossible; however, his preparation is slightly different to everybody else. Two World Cups in May, TdSuisse, Dutch Road Nationals, then a week of the Tour. And now turning up much later than everybody else, so he can do more training. And I wonder how much missing the 'test' event in autumn 2019 will matter.

If I was assessing the race, as a horse race, then I'd put my money on the known form - Matthias.

Well, not fully surprisingly Carapaz won the road race. One has to wonder if similar to Ecuador climate setting helped in.

One also can ask if things would be a bit different if Pidcock and MvdP were there...I do feel they could have managed the climbs.

I am grateful though they opted for the XCO race, it will be a thriller.

Personally I would think they would be nowhere near top. Van Aert is different kind of guy then Pidcock or MvDP, and just because he was there, I don't think it means MvdP would also make it through in top group. Most of top guys were way more climbers then sprinters or typical one day race specialists.

I just watched the women's race from Rio--it's on YouTube if you haven't seen it. It was the first time I'd watched it. What a ride from Pendrel! Commentators were talking about her pulling the curtain down on her career. Lol. Five years later--and a baby--and back for another round.
