I am going to order my new fork this week, and am torn between the Shiver DC and the Monster T. I do realize the MrT is about 4 lbs heavier, so no need for anyone to point that out.

I have a medium BigHit Expert, and need to know which to buy. Evryone seems to have very good things to say about each. I DO NOT want to have to buy "drop crowns" or aftermaket pieces to make this work with my ride, I just want to take it out of the box, tune it for me, and ride it. I am pretty much sold on the MrT, but the Shiver sems to get a lot of accolades too....

the difference between buying a drop crown and regular crown is the same as choosing between a small and medium frame. You simply specify that you need a tall crown, and its no extra cost, you simply get the drop one instead. That shouldnt affect your purchasing decision, unless you're buying used and it doesnt have the proper crown.

Also in case you're buying a new one off the showroom floor which has the improper crown, Marzocchi will swap the crown out free of charge.

I say Shiver...and make sure it comes with the proper crown (this goes for just about any fork out there anyways....)

Buy the shiver...i ride a monster T, but the shiver gives you the same peformance for less wieght...smooth and bottomless travel. but, if you want to buy a monster, go right ahead. its a bit stiffer and stonger than the shiver. both are great forks.

ok just checked out the forks on the MArzocchi site. (go for shiver it looks cooler)

well thats just it. Erm your guys wouldn't mind explaing to me what the difference in these two forks is apart form the obvious ones like weight or travel. and appearance

Just i'm trying to learn an much as possible about bikes coz i know very little. and as for forks i know nothing really, any info gretaly appreciated

How much do you weigh?? If youare over 250lbs get the 04 monsters...it would be a great fork for you.

If you are less than that and racing seriously go with the Shiver.

If you are none of the above pick up an 02 Monster T.

I ran an 02 Monster, then an 03 Monster and now I have a shiver.

The 03 Monster was definately the most confidence inspiring. Having that on the front of your bike makes barreling through things so easy. Picking lines in rock gardens is easy because of the sheer beef and stiffness. Drops are nuthin'. The fork is really super plush, big and awesome...but it's heavy.

The 02 with alittle less travel is one of the best forks ever made IMHO. Not overly heavy, still supa stiff, abit less travel and nearly as smooth.

The Shiver is a good fork. I really like mine. Not super confidence inspiring but it does the job excellently and never complains. If I were doing repeated drops like I used to I would want one of the Monsters but I am just racing and shuttling with the bike these days so it's perfect.

I don't think you NEED the drop crown. I guess you would only need it if you had a super long headtube(large big hit maybe??) and couldn't raise your lower crown enough in the stanchions to get the top crown fully on. I would say go with the standard because it will keep your head angle a little bit steeper and allow for quicker steering.

get the shivers!!!!!!!! they are lighter..(but who cares about weight cuz i dont) and you can get the same performance just about!!! Shivers are cooler anyways!!

Werd...the 02 monsters were the best. i have an 03 and i dont even have to choose lines, it makes em for me nah, but still, shiver is a great fork. but like i said, if your not convinced, get the monster---reliable, stiff, plush, strong, and prbably the smoothest fork on the market.

you'll need a drop crown, the one with the 165mm stack height.

wrong, it absolutly needs the drop crown otherwise the upper crown wont fit (do your homework next time, this bad advice is expensive) . Also the top crown has nothing to do with the headangle adjustment, because this is limited by the lower crown and tire size.

The Shiver pretty much doesnt have in room to change the headangle much anyways, not to any noticible degree, since there isnt much tire clearance to play with.

You will need the drop crown, seeing as the Med BH is 137mm HT. Standard crown fits 145mm HT, Tall/Drop fits 163mm HT. Good luck it will be tight. Don't plan on using a FSA Pig DH Pro headset, stack height is @ 30mm. My 03 Big Hit HT with headset, FSA Pig DH Pro, was @ 170. That's why the Shiver didn't work for me and I needed a Monster T, it has a 190mm space. Good luck.

Edit - FYI, you will need to find a headset with a stack height of less than 1" or 26mm. Good luck. Also, it would appear allot of people on here don't do there homework, eh Zedro. "get a Shiver" Hahaha. Monster T all the way.

yeah, officially its a 163mm stack height, but you can squeeze a few extra mm's out of it, especially if you are running like a 2.5 tire, or by loosing a few mm's off the top crown overlap which isnt so bad considering the drop crown overall has more overlap than the shorter one. Also the stock headset seems to be a generic one, which are usually fairly short (the Pig is practically the tallest one out there). Buddy on a medium 2003 BigHit was using a Shiver no problem as well.

When I researched for my Large Big Hit, I found 4 forks that fits direct, no new/aftermarket crowns needed. Boxxer, Jr.T, Super T and Monster T. Boxxer didn't work well for my heft, 235lbs. Super/Jr.T BAD tire clearence. Monster sweet, but heavy like me - perfect match. Honestly, if I could have I would have got the 888 or stayed on a Boxxer. The HT height is the one flaw I found with the Big Hit's, there too tall
