Since I'm still healing my injury and am yet unable to ride, I've been getting out into the woods for fun and exercise by walking some of the popular local trails. Some things I've noticed:
Only six more weeks until I'm saddled up again!
- At walking speed I notice a lot more wildlife.
- People on bikes are really concerned about my safety, as evidenced by all of the warnings I got about there being bikes on the trail "going really fast!"
- People on bikes aren't going as fast as they probably feel like they are going
- People on bikes sometimes speed up a little before slowing down. Maybe to heat up the brakes?
- People on bikes like to show me their "race-face" to make sure I know how hard they're riding.
- It takes a lot longer to walk up Whoops than it takes to ride down it
- I can see and hear you coming on your bike from a mile away, so it seems to me that any hiker paying even a modicum of attention should be able to know you're coming and not be startled.
