Oakley Mag Shorts
I have the Oakley Direct Dial shorts. I liked them so much I bought my GF a pair. They're great for cold weather riding or anywhere a bit of protection would help since they're so long and are made from thicker material.
I've been retiring my old riding shorts (3 pairs of the same Pearl Izumi) and picked up the Oakley Mag shorts from HuckNRoll. I ordered the 28 since I thought they run big like the Direct Dial, but they were actually true to size so I had to exchange them for 30s. The shorts come with a good liner and have a waffle-like texture which means lots of ventilation. It's been cold in the Bay Area (~45 degF) and I've been wearing knee warmers. The shorts were great and I didn't get cold at all. The bottoms sit just above my knee so they're plenty long without restricting pedaling.
The shorts are innovative. They use two sides of velcro instead of buttons or metal closures to close your waist. This means infinite adjustability. The downside is that the velcro will eventually degrade (Oakley probably used more resilient materials). Buttons and metal closures generally don't degrade.
There are four pockets--two in the front with zippers (also for ventilation) and two side pockets for gear. I think the "Mag" in the name comes from the magnetic side pocket closures. Nifty for your wallet, phone, and keys while walking around. I can only tolerate a packet of gel in my side pockets when I'm riding so I don't use them often.
I've only gone on two rides on them and I'm VERY pleased. I'll try to post some pictures later.
I bought them from HuckNRoll for $94. I ordered some gloves and applied a $20 off $100 coupon. I actually returned the 28's, ordered 30's and some lube and applied another $20 coupon!
