Yesterday it looked as if we would have enough time before the rain hit to get some riding in. We get to the top of the trail and I start riding around waiting for the other 2 guys to bring a car down for shuttles. I’m hitting this little jump while I’m waiting and start getting warm (keep in mind its like 50 degrees). I take of my sweatshirt and it turns out I forgot a T-shirt that morning and all I have is my beater thinking I will warm up more from riding, and I did. We start riding and boy was it great a little bit of wet/mud, great traction, and I wasn’t getting to warm. We do 2 shuttles and I’m doing some of the best riding I have ever done.
We are on our way down the 3rd time and I think nothing of it raining a bit harder beyond “looks like it’s the last run for today.” I come into the last corner on the inside line, the outside one is a big rut, and as I come through it I am in a 2 wheel drift through the corner. Well as I’m coming through the corner my rear tire slides a bit to far and goes into the rut, I go over sideways on my shoulder and slide for a while through the mud and rocks. I get up and walk down to the car and wash the blood/mud off.
I get down to the car and the other 2 guys go up top to get the other shuttle vehicle and it starts to pour while I wait. At that point I realized how much I really do love riding, I am there bleeding, dirty, in the pouring rain with only an under shirt, cold, and quite possibly one of the biggest smiles on my face in my entire life.
