Epic

I paid $90 a night for camping reservations before I checked the schedule and found out there was no epic. I think I remember something about last year's epic being looked at for environmental concerns. I guess it didn't pass the test.

It could be because the BLM is NOT letting Sea Otter use ANY of the trails they've used in
the past, at least for the XC course. That would greatly reduce the chances of having a somewhat challenging course because you'd be sent into the East Garrison area. It (East G.) is fun to ride, just alot different than Ord Proper as the locals know it.

Am I understanding you correctly? The XC course will totally different for '06? Or are you refering to the Epic course?

"The Sea Otter Classic is also pleased to announce a new course for the cross-country races. In partnership with the Bureau of Land Management and as part of our responsibility as stewards of the Fort Ord trails, we have designed a new course to include all of the features you love about the trails of the Laguna Seca Recreation Area. Moving the events to this new course will help preserve the trails we all love and balance trail use around the park."

Under 'Maps':

"Course maps for this event are being produced and will be posted when they are complete. Please check back later. "

Translation:

"The race will mostly be on sandy fire roads with some pavement mixed in for technical variation."

Wow...you guys are starting early!

I hope, I hope...they didn't just kill the biggest MTB event the west coast has.
Their RV camping fees will eventually sour me from attending more than one day.

Damn, I thought the whole point of the race was to ride on fun swooping single tracks. Guess the enviros won out... again.

That sounds just like what we rode at Cougar Mountain...not that it was a bad course, but it sure wasn't Sea Otter, which is a blast of a course.

I can think of numerous other trails in Ft. Ord that would/will blow away the courses they have used in the last few years....It's just that what makes a "fun course" to me & other's here wouldn't be other's (including the Pro's) "cup o' tea". They'd hate me and the things I'd make them do. :D

The "Epic 50 Miler" wouldn't be that Epic as the trails that would have to be used (as I said before) would be pretty much flat. You'd be fresh as a daisy after 50 miles on the East side. :p

Under the XC Race description they say:

"We are pleased to announce a new course for 2006! In partnership with the Bureau of Land Management and as part of our responsibility as stewards of the Fort Ord trails, we have designed a new course to include all of the features you love about the Sea Otter Cross Country. Have no fear - you will still fight your way up short, steep climbs, enjoy singletrack of rocks, sand and other challenges, thrill through tight sections in the trees, and ride new open fields of scenery. Line up and ride clockwise on the track this year!"

When I first read the clockwise comment I thought they meant riding down the Grind and climbing through sand and lots of uphill singletrack. :D

Lil' Course Update...

Nothing dead-set yet, but a bunch of different trails to be used.
11, 50, 22, 60, 82 and others. It seems as though they may use
the Goat Trail which contradicts what they have previously said
about NOT using the "overused" trails of previous courses.

- Speaking of overusing and overused trails, our fellow trailusers,
the horse crowd held an "Endurance Event" on many of the trails
used in previous Sea Otters right after our 1st thorough rain soaking
of the year  yay. Do they ride on the sides of the fireroads?
Do they ride on the sides of the singletrack? No, they ride all the way
across both and off of both  nice.

Official email from Sea Otter Classic

Sadly, I got the attached email from SOC:

Thank you for your interest in the Sea Otter Classic. We are so appreciative of all the athletes that participate in the event every year, that is what has kept this event going for 16 years. Unfortunately we have had to cancel the Epic ride for 2006. We are working with county agencies to find a route that will be a fun and challenging course for the participants, but also can withstand the erosion challenges that we face on the property. We expect to have the event back in 2007. Please visit our website at www.seaotterclassic.com to see all the fun and exciting things will take place during the 2006 Sea Otter Classic.<o =""></o>

I agree. I rode down 82 this weekend, and it was like the trail was rototilled. I'm glad they didn't ride the Goat Trail, although I heard couch was also molested by the horses.
