Niner Sizing - I'm an In Betweener

Hey Niner riders - I'm 5'9" and I currently ride a small Karate Monkey.

A Niner is on my short list of frames to replace the KM (looking for something a little different - maybe nicer steel or maybe scandium), but I'm sort of in between sizes.

I'd love to hear what your different set ups are and why you went with either a small or medium frame based on your height etc.

Also I'd love to hear what seatpost and stem combo you are running.

The ETT of the Medium Niners makes me nervous, but I realize they are designed for riders to utilize short stems.

Any tips or feedback you could share, and maybe photos of you on your bike in riding position would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

You're a med i think.

I'm 67.5" tall with a 31.25" riding inseam. I'm on a small SIR9. Straight post, 90mm stem, SLR seat is 1cm from all the way back. The bike either fits me perfectly, or is 1cm too long on the TT as is. I want to go to a ~80mm stem to help with the steering, so then it will also be perfect on the TT length.

Check with Rainman, he is 5'4" and rides a Med. Leslie, races for Niner, she is 5'7" ish, and rides a Med.
I have an email in to Rainman.

I am thinking Medium with short stem and straight post.

Right now I'm on a Straight Thomson and a 120mm stem on my Karate Monkey and I've got my saddle as far back on the rails as possible.
Sizing

Mark,

You or anyone else is welcome to call or email us about sizing. I have sized many riders and I am happy to make sure you get the right size frame. Please provide height in socks, cycling inseam, and bar width you will be using to help me.

Thanks Chris

I'd say I'm 5'9" in socks, cycling inseam is probably around 30" and and I would like to run a 26" wide bar give or take a bit.

I sent you an email back.. :)

Chris @ Niner will help you out as well, but as I said in my email to you, I recommend a medium size frame.

I use a short 50mm Thomson stem and a Moots straight seatpost with the saddle right in the centre of the rails setup.

Obviously, at my height [5-4"] I should be on a small size frame...but I prefer the medium size as it suits my riding style.

Mark,

You will fit a medium fine.

Thanks Chris - now to start selling off used stuff and start saving.

Would it be best to run my Reba at 100mm on your frames?
Travel.

Shock travel depends on where you live and the type of riding you do. If you are using 80mm now then 80mm will be fine with a Niner (etc for 100mm) Our frames are designed to work with either travel setting.

Well I just mailed out a check to a guy in Massachusetts for a slightly used Medium EMD 9 frame. Any recommendations on stem length for a 5'9" guy?

I was thinking 90mm or maybe 70mm.

Advice? Suggestions?
I started with a 90, dropped to a 70, then to a 50mm, which is what I use now on my SIR 9.

But...on my small sized frame One Niner I use the 90mm stem.

Shorter than 90mm... I'm 5'10", med. frame with a 90mm stem and I bet I could go shorter. Niners and short stems play nice together.
Sorry Guys for bumping this old post but I think I need a new stem also I'm riding a med EMD with a 100mm stem. I'm 5'9" with a 30" inseam I was thinking 90mm but after reading this I'm thinking 70 or 80mm? also I'm using a 26" bar 11 degree Salsa

Thanks Mike
Why do people think that height is all you need to size a frame? :???: Seriously you might only be 5'9" but might have really long arms or short arms or anything like that. I'm 6'2" and most would plop me on a Large frame if they only took my height into consideration, however I have very long arms and legs for 6'2" so I ride an XL RIP9 WITH a 120/0 stem and flat bar.

i'm your size and i ride a medium air9 and run a 70mm stem.. its nice and comfy
I am 6 foot with 32" inseam, I ride a Rip 9 medium frame with a 115mm/10 rise Thomson stem, 1" riser bars, and a straight Thomson seat post. I love the fit and the medium frame just feels a whole more flick-able than the large demo I rode. To me 29ers allow you to run a bit smaller frame than you could if it was a standard mountain bike running 26" wheels.
I agree completely

I typically run a large frame and I'm running a medium 29er with a 90mm stem. Fits perfect. Heck, I could probably go 70mm and like it.

Hmm. I'm 6' 1", and I have a Niner SIR 9 in large in my shed that I'm taking on a demo ride tomorrow... the shop have a large frame in stock, or a second-hand, perfect condition medium - I can save 30/40% on the frame if I get the medium...decisions, decisions....I'm 6'1", and would want to keep a shortish (70mm max) stem

I am just under 6' and ride a large. I have a long torso and short legs so I need the reach and with the low top tube standover is not a problem. The ETT (plus some tweaking with stem length) is the important measurement. What ETT measurements does your current bike(s) have?
