The RockShox Monarch that came with my 2016 Niner RIP9 Carbon frame started feeling "stiff." Probably because I never completed an air can service. Finding the right service kit was much more difficult than I thought it would be, so I bought an aftermarket (vs. original equipment) shock from RockShox, with the same eye to eye and travel, but different tune. See all of the technical details from RockShox below.

Long story short, I am finding it very difficult to get good advice regarding what shock to use or how to set it up for this bike. I am 6'5" and 250#, so you might say i have special needs...

My questions for forum members:

Which of the two shocks below is most likely to be the best for someone my size and weight riding this bike, and why?

Where can I get either of these shocks "tuned" for my use, and about how much does that cost?

Is there a completely different shock I should consider, and why?

Thank you.

Here are the technical details from RockShox (no LBS or Niner came close to providing this level of information):

Original Equipment Shock = 39T53243192 = 2016 Monarch RT 200x51 high volume air can LL3 tune D2 body

Aftermarket Shock = 31T83216621 = 2019 Monarch RT3 200x51 DebonAir can MM tune D1 body

Here are the differences- the 2016 Monarch RT has a high volume air can with a low rebound/"low 3" compression tune that is a custom tune for an OE bike manufacturer specific to one of their frames. This shock has rebound adjustment and Threshold (pedaling platform essentially).

The 2018 Monarch RT3 will have a 3 position compression adjustment. It has a DebonAir can, which allows for a custom tune feel to the air spring with the use of Bottomless Rings in the air can sleeve. It has a mid rebound/mid compression tune (this is what we offer as the standard tune for all shocks sold aftermarket/off bike).

The service kit number the shop provided: 00.4315.032.330 is just an air can service kit, and its for the standard air can only- you don't have a standard air can on either of these shocks. One is High Volume and the other is DebonAir. If you are looking for full service on either of these shocks use kit:
11.4118.038.000 REAR SHOCK SERVICE KIT - FULL SERVICE MONARCH B1(RL) C1 (R,RT,RT3),D1 (RT3) (2014+)

If you want to do just the air can service use:
For the High Volume air can:
00.4315.032.390 AM REAR SHOCK AIR CAN SERVICE KIT, BASIC - MONARCH HIGH VOLUME B1(PLUS,XX,RL) C1 (R,RT3) (2014+)

For the DebonAir can:
00.4315.032.540 AM REAR SHOCK AIR CAN SERVICE KIT, BASIC - MONARCH DEBONAIR(2014+)
